DBT Therapy

Understanding Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a branch of cognitive behavioral therapy. It was developed for individuals who have very intense feelings. It is an evidence-based psychiatric therapy that will help you learn skills to control your strong emotions. It helps to decrease your self-destructive behaviors and improve your relationships with others. Although DBT is a widely used approach for treating borderline personality disorders, it has also been shown to assist individuals in resolving many other mental health issues. Some of these include depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

At Stanford Medical Center, we believe that you are not weak because of your emotional sensitivity. We will work with you to provide compassionate, effective and evidence based care to help you find healthier ways to cope with your emotions. FAQ'S

Who can benefit from DBT?

DBT can be beneficial not only to those who are diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, but also to those that engage in self-injurious behaviors/experiencing thoughts of suicide, have eating disorders, abuse drugs, suffer from major depression, anxious feelings, or have experienced post-traumatic stress disorder after a traumatic experience (PTSD).

Is group therapy required when doing DBT? Or can I just see an individual therapist?

The DBT protocol includes both an individual therapist and a group skills training session. These two approaches are complementary when one desires to take full advantage of the DBT approach. The individual therapist helps a client learn how to use the skills taught in the group therapy session in their individual situations.

Will participating in DBT help me to feel less emotional?

DBT will not remove or lessen the amount of emotion that you have experienced in life. DBT will provide you with the skills to better handle/cope with your intense reactions that you have on a daily basis as a result of your emotions. Throughout the course of DBT, you will gain an understanding of your emotional responses, learn how to tolerate distress without creating additional problems in your life, and respond in a more appropriate manner to the emotional responses that you experience.

How does DBT differ from CBT?

DBT has its roots in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) but has been modified to specifically assist individuals who struggle with the ability to successfully manage the overwhelming emotional experiences that are often part of their daily lives. While both CBT and DBT use various forms of acceptance and change, the differences are that DBT has a greater focus on the concepts of acceptance and validation as well as change, while CBT uses more generic skills. CBT provides a broader range of skills that can be utilized with multiple problems while DBT is more effective for those individuals who have problems related to managing their emotions.

Can I do DBT if I have never attended therapy before?

Yes. you can. DBT is suitable for individuals who are new to therapy and those who have prior therapy experience.
