Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, affecting an estimated 5–7% of people worldwide (Polanczyk et al., 2014). ADHD involves differences in brain networks that regulate attention, impulse control, and executive functioning, which can impact learning, behaviour, and emotional regulation (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022). Early recognition and intervention can greatly improve academic performance, social functioning, and overall wellbeing.
What is ADHD?
ADHD is characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity that interfere with daily life (APA, 2022). Neurobiological studies show altered neurotransmitter activity, including dopamine and norepinephrine, affecting attention and reward pathways.
Types of ADHD
- Predominantly Inattentive: Difficulty sustaining attention, forgetfulness, disorganisation.
- Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive: Restlessness, impulsivity, difficulty sitting still.
- Combined Presentation: Features of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
Common Signs & Symptoms
In Children:
- Easily distracted or forgetful
- Trouble following instructions
- Emotional outbursts
- Difficulty staying seated or quiet
In Adolescents:
- Procrastination and disorganisation
- Inconsistent academic performance
- Emotional sensitivity
- Time-management challenges
Symptoms must occur in more than one setting(home, school) and impact daily functioning.
How ADHD Can Affect Daily Life
Without support, ADHD may influence:
- Academic performance
- Peer relationships
- Emotional regulation and self-esteem
- Family dynamics
Early identification and intervention can reduce these challenges and improve long-term outcomes.
Evidence-Based Clinical Approach
1. Comprehensive Assessment
Our clinic follows best-practice guidelines using:
- Clinical interviews and developmental history
- Standardised assessment tools
- Teacher and parent feedback
2. Individualised Treatment
We use a multi-modal approach combining behavioural, educational, and pharmacological strategies (NICE, 2018):
- Behavioural Therapy: Teaches practical skills to manage attention, behaviour, and emotions.
- Parent Training & Coaching: Empowers parents to create supportive routines and manage challenging behaviours.
- School Support: Collaborates with educators to improve academic and behavioural outcomes.
- Medication: Can improve attention, impulse control, and emotional regulation, often alongside behavioural support.
Strengths of Clients with ADHD
Many individuals with ADHD display:
- Creativity and innovative thinking
- Intuition and empathy
- Hyperfocus on areas of interest
- Strong problem-solving skills
Focusing on strengths alongside managing challenges enhances self-esteem and motivation.
When to Seek Help
